Breast augmentation and mastopexy with breast prosthesis

There are several options to choose from if you are looking to improve the outward appearance of your breast. The option you eventually decide on will depend on the issues you want resolved, and what your personal preferences are.

Breast augmentation and breast lift (or mastopexy) are two of the most common breast enhancement techniques. Depending on the situation, these procedures may either be performed as separate surgeries, or combined in one single plastic surgery operation. Below, we take a detailed look at how these techniques work, to help you decide which one is best suited to your aesthetic desires.

Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation (see video) serves to increase the size of the bust by inserting implants in your breasts to obtain a bigger size. These implants are of various types, shapes and sizes. In terms of their make-up, implants can either be filled with silicone gel or saline solution.

With respect to their shapes, implants can be round or teardrop (anatomical implants). The desired size of the implant is achieved by varying the amount of saline solution or silicone gel in the implant shell.

Saline and Silicone Implants

Saline Implants

Saline implant shells are filled with a salt or saline solution. The saline breast implant technology has undergone changes since it was first manufactured, and implants are now being produced with thicker shells to prevent leakage.

Saline implants require a physically less intrusive surgical procedure. Empty breast implants are inserted in the breasts through small incisions, and then filled with saline solution. As a result of this, the surgical scars from a procedure to insert saline implants are less obvious than those that will be obtained from a silicone implant surgery (pre-filled silicone implants usually require longer incisions).

Relative to the outcome of a silicon breast implant procedure, the saline breast implant has been reported to yield good results in terms of smoother ridges, smaller scars, and increased breast size. Saline breast implants are however more obvious to the eye and to touch. The breast envelope skin may also wrinkle overtime.

Silicone Implants

The newest form of silicone breast implants is the cohesive silicone gel (or “gummy bear” breast implants). These cohesive silicone gel implants have been reported to be much firmer than previous silicone implant types. They are also said to be less susceptible to wrinkling, collapsing, or distortion. Many women say that silicone gel implants give more natural results than saline implants, although they are more prone to leakages.

Round and Teardrop (Anatomical) Breast Implants

The two major breast implant shapes are the round and teardrop shapes. We take a look at the differences between these shapes.

Round Breast Implants

The traditional shape for breast implants is the round shape, and it remains the most common choice for women undergoing breast enhancement procedures in popular plastic surgery hubs like Los Angeles, Rio de Janeiro, Berlin, and other locations around the world. Round implants are available in different sizes and dimensions, and they can help achieve a soft and round outlook for your breasts.

The main advantage of round breast implants is that a smooth and soft shell can be used. Smooth implants are generally more comfortable than textured ones, and they are also less likely to cause wrinkles and ripples. Round implants tend to assume more natural positions and movements than teardrop shaped implants. In other words, a round-shaped implant takes on a teardrop shape in a standing position, and a flat shape in a lying position. Saline and silicone breast implants can both be obtained in round-shaped forms.

Teardrop/Anatomical Cohesive Gel Breast Implants

Teardrop-shaped cohesive gel implants are designed to retain their shapes. Because cohesive silicone gel is thicker and firmer than traditional silicone round shape types, teardrop implants can maintain a more definite shape. These implants come in a variety of shapes, which makes it easier to fit them to a woman’s anatomy and desired bust shape. Some are designed as wide ovals, while others are like tall ovals.

Breast augmentation offers a number of benefits. One of their more obvious advantages is that they allow women to get the kind of look that they want and desire. Implants can be easily fitted to match expectations. In addition, the scarring from breast augmentation procedures is usually in inconspicuous places. Breast augmentation procedures also achieve much larger breast sizes than are obtained in mastopexy or breast lift.

Breast Lift (Mastopexy)

Breast lift (otherwise known as a mastopexy) is a surgical technique performed on sagging breasts to give them much firmer shapes. Over time, breasts lose their firmness as a result of nursing, pregnancies, or just old age.

A breast lift surgery does not offer a permanent solution to ptosis (sagging). It only temporarily slows down the effects of gravity; aging will eventually cause the breasts to sag again. A breast lift procedure may also be carried out to reduce the size of the areola (the dark pigmented region surrounding the nipple), and to reposition the nipple.

A breast lift procedure in itself doesn’t actually increase breast sizes. Some women may however elect to increase the sizes of their breasts by having an implant inserted behind the breast tissue. When compared to results from a breast augmentation procedure, a breast lift operation generally leads to more scarring.

Although breast lift (mastopexy) and breast augmentation are listed as separate surgical procedures, they can also be combined to achieve a certain kind of result. For instance, if a woman who intends to undergo a breast augmentation procedure also has sagging breast issues, just the breast augmentation procedure will not be enough. In this case, both lift and augmentation procedures may be required.

Also, in cases of pronounced and severe sagging or where a woman has small breast tissues, a breast lift procedure might not be enough to achieve desired results; a breast augmentation surgery may also be necessary. The two procedures may be done in one single plastic surgery operation, or they may be conducted separately, one after the other.

Patients, who have undergone mastopexy or mastectomy, may also choose to undergo a breast reconstruction surgery. This is typically done by emplacing breast prosthesis in the hollow left by the procedure, to form a new contour.
